Super Bulky Blanket of Awesomeness!

OMG! This is the most awesome-est blanket ever!!!! In fact this is the third one I’ve made.  The greatest thing is that it is so super easy to make. The hardest part about this blanket is finding the yarn. I find myself constantly driving around the state of Connecticut looking for it.

I found the yarn that I am going to use at Hobby Lobby. It’s their Yarn Bee Eternal Bliss brand in Ivory and Medium Gray. I used just under 6 skeins of each so 12 skeins total if you doing all one color. Be aware, this yarn is typically very difficult to find. Hobby Lobby has done a great job of ordering the yarn as they run out but if you see it buy it!  Bernat has a very similar yarn as well but they are even harder to find in the stores.

Let’s get started on the blanket. This blanket works up super quick and once you get the stitch down, you can finish this blanket in a matter of hours…oh yes, you heard me correctly…HOURS- not days.  I chose a V-stitch for this blanket as it is a nice loose stitch. Since this yarn is so thick, I didn’t want a tight, dense stitch.  This stitch is very easy to learn and if you want to see this stitch with a different yarn, check out my blog for the v-stitch blanket I made for my Aunt.

I used a 25mm (U) crochet hook. This is thing is huge and may take a few minutes to get used to. You can click the image below to direct you to the hook I used on Amazon.com.

Begin by chaining 41. This will be the width of your blanket. You can adjust this however you would like just make sure you end up with an odd number of chains.

The first row is the hardest (although it is not hard at all).  Starting in the 5th chain from the hook, we are going to make our first “V”. (1dc, ch1, 1dc) then we are going to skip the next chain space and then do our next “V” (1dc, ch1, 1dc) in the chain after that. Continue this across until your very last chain space where you would do 1dc to end your row. Chain 3 and turn. Super simple right?

Row 2 is even easier. Your chain 3 that you just did counts as your end dc. In your first “V” from the hook, crochet another “V” (1dc, ch1, 1dc) in the chain space between the two dc’s. Repeat this all the way across in each remaining “V”. After your last “V” you are going to end your row with 1 dc in the top chain from your very first ch3.

That’s it! Continue row 2 until you reach the desired length for your blanket. If you are changing colors, figure out the frequency of color changes. I did large stripes so I changed color every 3 rows for a total of 15 rows.

This blanket makes a great gift or keep it for yourself. I made one in brown and red colors and it is my favorite blanket to cuddle up with. This blanket is also great for those with anxiety or have trouble sleeping since it has so much weight to it.

Good luck and share your pictures of your projects below!

Pattern:

Row 1: starting in 5th ch from hook (this counts as your end of row dc) start the first “V” *(1dc, ch1, 1dc), sk 1ch, (1dc, ch1, 1dc), sk 1ch * Repeat from the first “*” for the remainder of the row until you reach the end at last ch space will be 1dc. Ch3, Turn

Row 2: starting in the first “V”, *(1dc, ch1, 1dc) in the chain space between the 2 dc*, Repeat from the first “*” for the remainder of the row until you reach the end in the top chain of your ch3, 1dc. Ch3, Turn

Row 3: Repeat Row 2 (fasten off – if you are changing colors)

*** (if you are not changing colors, continue repeating Row 2 until you reach the desired width of your blanket)

Row 13: If you are changing colors- sl st through both loops of your end of row dc with your new color. Ch3. Repeat Row 2 all the way across.

  1. What were the dimensions of your blanket when you finished?

    1. Hi Kaitlyn, I’m so sorry for the delayed reply! My final size was 73 x 60 inches. It was large enough to just drape over a full sized bed. You can certainly add more rows to make it longer

  2. Approx what is size of tjis one?How do you wash it?

    1. Hi Donna, I’m so sorry for the delayed reply! My final size was 73 x 60 inches. It was large enough to just drape over a full sized bed. You can certainly add more rows to make it longer. This blanket is machine washable if you can fit it in your wash machine. I wash mine with cold water and on delicate in the dryer just to prevent any shrinking.

  3. Are you able to arm knit with this yarn?

    1. Hi Val, you are although it isn’t a very tight stitch. I have small arms and I feel like it came out more like a tight fishnet. But it was still warm and I would certain arm knit a scarf with this yarn. I think it’s too loose for a blanket but that’s personal preference 🙂 I hope this helped!!

  4. hi can u maybe upload a video. i would like to know how to make this specific blanket but i don’t understand all the directions for the pattern. thanks

    1. Hi Sierra, I am working on creating a video for this blanket 🙂 I hope to have something up soon!

  5. I feel like mine doesnt look as cozy/tight! Is tours quite hol-y looking? I would attach a pic but it doesnt look like I can 🙁

    Thanks!
    Haley

    1. .Hi Haley, I didn’t realize you couldn’t upload an image. I think I fixed that so feel free to try to upload a picture of your stitches. Are you using a 25mm hook?

  6. How many skeins did you use for every three rows. I have three different colors and want to use those but I want to make sure I get the right amount.

    1. Hi Taja, If I remember correctly each skein completed approximately a row and a half (except for the first row and the beginning chain). It also depends on which yarn you decided to use. If you are using the Yarn Bee (from Hobby Lobby) or Mainstays (from Walmart), I believe those are both 6 oz skeins while the Bernet blank Big yarn I believe is 10 oz so you get a little bit more per skein. I hope that helps 🙂

  7. Where can I find yarn bee eternal bliss?

    1. Hi Amy! Eternal Bliss is a Hobby lobby brand. Michael’s crafts stores carry Bernat Blanket Big which is basically the same yarn. Walmart also came out with their brand “mainstay ” in the same yarn too

  8. Is there a pattern to crochet a circular rug? Eternal Bliss is super soft.

    1. Hi Avril! I do have a pattern I’ll upload and send it over. I love the Eternal Yarn!!!

  9. Hi Kristen, Just want to say Thank You for sharing. I was at a loss about a Christmas gift for one of my daughters-in-law and seeing your blanket and pattern made my mind up. Two minutes later I bought the yarn at Hobby-Lobby’s website and the crochet hook at Amazon. They had beige yarn left and a few other colors but not enough of one other than beige. I know she’ll love it. I’ll have to tell her it’s your credit for the idea, not mine. Best regards, Amanda Bidwell
